Has The NRA Lost Its Clout With Voters?
Interesting piece over at First Read right now about how poorly the National Rifle Association fared following its much-publicized $15 million effort in this fall’s federal races:
[I]n the states where the NRA Political Victory Fund’s toughest efforts against Obama were concentrated — gun-rich regions in states like Colorado, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico — Obama’s victory was decisive. The Democratic nominee won those states by eight, 11, and 15 points, respectively. Of the 11 states where the NRA’s anti-Obama ads were reportedly aired, McCain won only one: Texas. Down the ballot, the NRA backed all six of the Republican Senate candidates who lost to Democratic challengers. And in several high-profile House contests, NRA-backed candidates like Ed Tinsley, Bill Sali, Steve Chabot, and Phil English came up short.
Is America much less concerned about wedge issues when they’re facing huge economic problems, or are we finally seeing the waning of the gun lobby’s influence?

Or…was the U.S. Supreme Court’s favorable Second Amendment decision this year the worst thing to happen to the NRA since the Court finally made clear that a private right to gun ownership exists (with limitations)?
I’ve always believed that the last thing the anti-abortion groups really want is a Supreme Court decision agreeing with them as it would kill their political clout and ability to use the issue as a wedge. Has that just happened with the NRA and the wedge issue of gun ownership?
Thoughts?
